Author Subject: Clutch Cable - Failed Fitting!

Today I attempted to replace my old and quite tired clutch cable. I'd read both of the FAQs, had the Haynes manual and a gullible helper at hand.

However, I can not, for the life of me, get to the point of being able to guide the new white clip through the bulkhead into the footwell. Removing the old cable was a b*tch, but I'd reached the point of no return, obviously. Now I'm kind of stuck with a half fitted clutch cable.

In addition to this, one of the jacking points broke, meaning I now have a bump in the driver's footwell. Oh and the exhaust pretty much went this morning as well. Not a good day Angry:

So what do I do? I think I have home start breakdown cover - so should be able to tow to a garage. Or is there anyone that would be able to sort it out where it's sat on my driveway. Perhaps a handy member (I'm in West London) Whistle:

Either way - recommendation of what to do will be appreciated!

Do you have a metal coat hangar? Clep that round the white clip and if you have some tape cover it up so there is no snagging points.

Then pull!

Worth fitting the round washer thing first I think and smearing it with washing up liquid.

Metal coat hanger - I did actually think of that, but didn't dare try... I'll give that a go this week if I get a chance.

I tied mine to a braided brake hose and then put tape all round it, went straight through. Worked fine till the clutch went 2 weeks later Sad

Reminds me of the first Mechanical Repairs day. Iplay was being smug about how easy it is to do the clutch cable and how it can be done in 15 minutes. An hour later they were snapping off the air con pipes (good job the car was supercharged!) Laugh

get some of that garden wire on a reel and whip it round the white clip. can get my cable in and out within mintues i have done it so many times in the last week it's laughable Unsure i have never struggled

then again i am the chuck norris of the peugeot-fixing game

When you say garden wire on a reel - is this the green ~3mm stuff? So same idea as the wire coat hanger? Just pull, eh?!

its like chicken wire, its about .5mm thick at most and very flexible, has a green pvc coating. i just whipped it round the pedal and through the hole, pulled it on from the inside and the wire jammed it onto the pedal and then i whipped it round the clutch arm in the bay.. i did struggle getting the white clip to stay on the pedal first time as i did it on my own, but the garden wire made it stick on

Ok, so gave this another go following on from the suggestions. Now using a wire coat hanger. This was threaded through the white clip (which still has the string attached), surrounded with parcel tape, lubed up using some engine oil and then re-entry was attempted. I say attempted since I still can't get the bugger through the bulkhead, but I'm definitely closer than I was at the weekend Wink

I'm now 6 hours into this job. Want to place bets as to the total if and when this job is finished?!

The other way to do it is get a friend to keep tension on a bit of string threaded through the hole and tied on to the cable. Then you can wiglle it until it goes through the hole.

Strangely this is one of the beauties of a V6 conversion - the clutch cable is p*ss easy to do LOL

The saga continues... So this morning, after much heaving and some hoeing, I've got the little bugger of a white clip through the bulk head - about bloody time too!

However, since I wasn't in the footwell when the old clip disengaged (my gullible helper was), I'm not 100% sure how to get everything back together. Yes, I know, I'm a bit of a numpty...

Now I presumed that the white clip would just pull down and through a part of the pedal and clip round the brass bar on the pedal itself, but it doesn't look like there's enough slack - so either it goes somewhere else or I dunno... Unsure

Here's a picture of what it currently looks like in my footwell:



Red circle is for where the white clip is, green circle is for where I assumed I had to get it to, but there's no way it is, and believe me I've tried pulling quite hard. By the way, the other end of the clutch cable is currently free.

SO, where does the white clip go and how do I do it? Unsure

white clip goes where the old one came off, very top of the pedal Thumbs up


directly above vertically from the hole in the bottom of the pedal box (cable enters vertical not horizontally)

Yeah I think what you have circled in green is for a redundant 'sporty feel' spring that most people have taken off now.

As welshpug said it hooks on right at the top of the pedal, and undeneath it rather than on the side, have a feel about and I'm sure you'll find it (it might be a bit of a pain in the arse by the way).

Half the time - that's still 3.5hours! If I couldn't do it less than a quarter, then I'd be gutted... Huh?
