Hi,

My first thread and post on here(woo hoo! Big grin).

Car is a GTi-6, 2000, phase 3.

Anyways, here's my issue:

Took my 6 in for an MOT. Everything was good until emissions test came (at this point, I didn't know fans were not working). The temp had gone to red and loads of white smoke started coming from the engine compartment!! MOT aborted!

Garage managed to bypass relays and and fans working fine (so motors are fine) so MOT passed!

But of course, want to get to the bottom of this fan problem. So here's what I've done so far:

- Taken brown sensor out - fans still not working

- When taking the brown sensor out, I get a clicking from the right hand relay (high speed), so that relay must be working. No clicks from any other relays.

So am I right in saying that the brown sensor is working, one of the relays are working but the other 2 relays (left hand side and change over relay) are shagged??

Also, a diagnostics test (at the garage) was done and came up with these errors:

0022: fuel air mixture, self adaption control.
0002: cooling system, temp sensor or circuit.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm sorry but reading other threads on same issue have proper confused me!!

sounds like there's a seized fan if you get the click but nothing else.

Problem sorted! Both motors weren't working on the fans. Opened them up and some of the magnets had become seized. A bit of WD40 has done the job Big grin

One question though.. the fans kick in now without any problems when it gets to temperature but when I take out the brown sensor, the fans still kick!

Does this mean that even though the fans kick in, the temp sensor is buggered?? And if this is the case, where is the temp sensor located?? Any help would be appreciated.

that's quite normal, the brown sensor is the one that the fan control unit uses, if it gets no signal from it the fans will come on.

Oh rite cool.. thanks for that.. so all good then it seems.. or so I thought.. another issue arises!

When the car is turned on and is on idle, the car is idling at the correct revs. When I put my foot on the accelerator, the revs would go considerably down and car would eventually stall. Started doing this yesterday.

On other times, it would start up fine and won't do the above and drive normally (mainly on cold starts). I'm guessing its the MAP sensor but I am not sure. Took the sensor off and cleaned it but that's done fook all!

Diagnostic test stated:

0022: fuel air mixture, self adaption control.

Hi Jamie

The motors are located behind the fans themselves. Here's how I fixed mine:

- Took brown sensor off => fans didn't kick in

- Took the relays off and bypassed the relays => still didn't kick in

- Took fans out and connected each fans directly to the battery => still nothing

- Took covers off the motors - it was the brushes that were knackered => WD40 did the job

- Connected it all up and its working fine.

I think firstly you need to bypass the relays and take it from there. I hope this helps.

Hi folks..

To save a new thread.. My fans won't kick in my themselves at all, but do when I tap them through the grill with a screwdiver.. Is this likely to be sticky motors (in which case how easy are they to remove to clean up?), or electrical? Cheers!

I had the same problem with one of my fans recently. I'd hit the motor with a screwdriver and it would splutter into life for a moment, then die again. It may well be possible to open it up, spray some WD40 in and make it work but I just chose to replace the fan - mainly because the front screw holding the fan blades onto the motor was so seized on I had to wreck the old unit to get it off its housing!

Either way the issue is fan motor related, as opposed to cooling system wiring I think.
