Hey all,

Had a major disaster with my -6 earlier this week, namely a very noisy knocking sound from the engine developed while I was on the motorway, swiftly followed by a lot of smoke coming from the engine, and a trail of engine oil being left on the hard shoulder of said motorway. It goes without saying that a tow home was required.

Though not being an expert in these matters, I think its clear that I need a replacement engine, though if someone could help me understand what has gone wrong here that would be much appreciated, and also if I am correct in saying that a total engine replacement is required.

Unsure

Doesn't sound good if I'm honest, sounds like bottom end failure.

I would guess it may of spun a bearing.

What colour was the smoke?

simply it is a new engine, if it left a trail of oil its either got a hole in the sump / oil plug dropped out or thrown a rod. Secondhand engine sounds like the best bet

botton end either ran dry of oil or is worn with age, big end knock, broke a rod, smashed hole in bloke, oil p*sses out on road, new engine required. Head and block will be trashed. Sorry for the doom and gloom but from what you have desctribed i would be almost certain thats whats happened

I did think that it may of thrown a rod, but thought that the recovery guy may of noticed LOL

My old 1.8XT 306 threw a rod, and punched a nice hole in the front of the block. Guess if it did it at the back of the block, would be harder to spot.

Like said, will be much easier to drop another engine in there.

Thanks for the information - yeah Welshpug, it did start making a tapping noise a couple of minutes before the actual incident, bad times. Looks like the plan is to stick a new engine in her!
