Hi guys. Ok, first mega problem with the 6 in 3 years of ownership.

I was driving home yesterday when i got stuck in some traffic, after sitting in this traffic for something like 3 minutes i noticed my temp guage was reading 90, i thought this was odd as i'd just started her up to start my journey and been driving for only 5-10 minutes.
About another minute later whilst still in this traffic i watched my temp guage move quite quickly all the way over past the red, bringing on my STOP light. I put my blowers on to let some heat out, and got nothing but cold air.
I pulled over, stopped the engine and opened the bonnet, Both my fans were spinning and the inlet manifold was freezing but the engine was red hot. I got a massive rag out the boot and slowly opened the water cap, and dirty brown water went everywhere, there was so much pressure it was unreal. I Checked the dipstick and the oil looked really thin, but not milky. On the short journey back home (at 20 mph in 6th, crapping my pants) engine sounded awful and felt down on power.

Can anybody confirm the worst, is this HG failure? Do they just go like this? There wasn't any white smoke or anything and she'd been running like a dream prior to this.

Help! Sad

They do just tend to give no real signs and then just let you have it like you describe, firstly i would refill the cooling system and restart the car from cold with the rad cap removed, if you can see alot of air circulating around it it will be a 90% chance the gasket has failed and it's putting pressure into the cooling system, normally you tend to get a misfire on initial start up and after a rev will clear, this is due to one of the cylinders having coolant in there and after starting it gets burnt and then starts to operate.

Get a compression tester and try that first - also check to see if the plugs are a different colour.

Not a great idea to open a pressurised and hot coolant system Doh

If you're lucky it will be limited to pressurising the cooling system and not mixed with the oil.

its just an XU engine though, anyone can fix them Smile

True. If it has mixed in with the oil, I presume there will be damage internally? It's been driven approx 3 miles since.

If it has mixed you would have potentially damaged the bearings, which is why many engines start knocking so soon after a headgasket Doh

Mine was doing the misfire on startup for some time but didn't mix with the oil till the gasket went properly, luckily caught it in time, I have taken the sump off and the bearings are still in good condition.

Make sure that your AA cover has 'relay' IIRC then drive it more than ¼ miles from home and call them saying that the stop light has come on and the temp is in the red etc etc. When they come out and diagnose the headgasket tell them that you trust a garage in leicester and give them the address.

My water temp creeps up a fair bit when im stuck in traffic for too long but its never been long enough for a stop light to come on, ive managed to get moving and air over the rad in time.

It has survived Oulton Park and over 1000 miles of driving since i noticed it (ive only had it about 1000 miles so i dont know about before that)

Could my head gasket be going??? Most older cars i've had - their temp has crept up whilst stationary???

more likely to be a poorly rad.

though the temperature the fans actually come on at is a fair amount higher than the temperature they sit at whilst on the move, as long as the fans can maintain the temperature and it doesn't keep on rising its fine.
