Im really happy with my current XSI (1998 phase 2). Its exterior is complete and everything is perfect i love it!

only problem is the engine is coming up to 130k.

Been thinking about a GTI6 conversion for a while now. I presume i would need

Engine
loom
gearbox
clutch
brakes

is there anything else i would need? How hard of a job is it?

Thanks

steering rack, gear lever, gear lever rod, reverse cable.

heater pipes, heater pipes heatshield.

master cylinder.

radiator, water pipes if not inc with engine.

ECU transponder unit + key chip.

130k is no problem for these engines.

I'd say take the shiny shit of return it to standard and flog it on, then just buy a 6.

because the gti6 box is longer, the gti6 rack stops the tyre from hitting the box.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand the mentality of some people.

For half the time, money and effort you can buy a black GTi6 and exhange the majority of the aesthetic parts that you like from your XSI. Why go through all the ball ache and costs to convert a lesser model when it's cheaper to buy the real deal?

Thumbs up

Well I got my XS very cheap so I'm not sure your whole money argument is valid. And on top of that there's
not many 306s left in as good condition as mine. So unless there's mint phase 3 6s around with the mods mine has for less than

if you got it cheap and its mint as you say you can sell for a profit, take all your favourite mods off before you sell it, and get a good 6, there's plenty out there.

also you'll pay a lot less insurance on a stock 6 than a modified xs.

It's c.a.r.'s old XS, so I assume he got the asking price for it as you quoted the figure above.

I agree with you there but this is already my 3rd 306 so don't want to go buying another

We are only trying to help mate. TBH if you convert it, you will lose money on it big time as it isn't a true 6, no matter what you change. You (and your wallet) will most likely regret it in the long run, and wish you just got an acctual GTi6.

Go for it! Don't bother with the gearbox, read the thread on xu7 conversion and realise the best way to a quick 306 may not be a 6 at all!! :getsflakjacketand flameproofunderwearsmiley:

i did the conversion 5-6 years ago on my xsi only because it was cheaper for me to do that than buy a genuine 6 but as said above i dont see the point

if your doing it though and going down the whole transponder swap route make sure its a full set from the same phase, i fitted a phase 2 engine to a phase 3 car and had head work, ended going for an unlocked/opened ecu and cutting the transponer wires on the engine loom

So a phase 2 ECU won't work with mine?

it will work but will need to be an open ecu (i.e removed from previous car with engine runing) then cut out the wires for the transponder circuit, if using like for like phased systems all the transponder, key ecu etc just swap over and plug in

any help you need when you are doing the conversion give me a pm mate ive done 5-6 xsi to gti6 over the years
