After reading the cambelt guide (http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=40662&page=last)

It quotes in post 2 that if the crank pulley doesn't line up then Ill need a new one??
Can anyone help/explain this? I thought it was a matter of a simple belt change so why would of the crank pulley move? Crazy

cheers

it moves cos the outer part that has the timing hole is on rubber and can spin which makes the timing out of alignment in relation to where it should be, crazy design. If it dont line up best to bin it and fit new or use an 8v one to line it up and fit belt the refit old pulley

Alright mate. Nice to see your busy at work - like me Big grin

The pulley is a two part one joined with rubber. Its an anti vibe thing. The rubber slips round and the timing hole is not where it should be. You can use a std 205 gti 8v pulley as its one piece. Or I will come down and give you a hand Big grin

Nice one. Give me a bell if you get stuck. John will have an 8v pulley on his buggered engine in his shed.

If I was to buy one I would fit an alloy one so it will never slip again!

alloy pulley will be fine or just borrow an 8v to time it up then fit your old pulley. The old pulley will be fine, its only that it cant be used for timing, your may have slipped it may not best to check before you buy a new one

We did my cambelt last night, and water pump too, the stock pulley was fine for me, it'd be worth double checking as previously stated before ordering a new one or anything. Though the alloy pulley isnt going to hurt either way, i actually have one sitting in my bedroom for my engine build to come.

The reason mine needed 16 new valves and a head rebuild when i bought it was becuuse the previous owner had had the belt done but never a water pump.

The veins on the back of the pump all fell off and jammed it solid resulting in belt faliure, Do the belt, water pump, idler and tensioner all at once mate its worth it Wink

Thumbs up .Tbh mate, just mark it with tipex or summut and then your laughing. A pair of 6mm drill bits for locking the cams is a good idea too.

Lock the 2 cam pulleys then mark the crank pulley. It will be timed right as its currently running on that timing now!

I have just changed mine this was as my crank pulley was out.
