i gotta fit a set of lifters tomorrow, they have arrived but they do not compress as they are ment to. i know that when you re-fit tappets your meant to drain the oil but i have been told as they are new they should be ok to go straight in and the pressure of bolting the cams in will free them up. am i right or do they need to be drained. i need to know asap. cheers

I do hope they are o.e, what was your reasoning to change them?

I am not sure if this helps, but when I stripped my head I had to compress some of the lifters with a g clamp.
Obvioulsy they arnt new ones but might help you out.

I have always been told to compress lifters before fitting, but again not sure if that is just for used ones, have you asked the supplier

Why are you changing them? I can't remember anyone ever having issues with one breaking before.

it all started with the head gasket going, i did this at work with some help from the fitter. the first time i did it it was really noisey. i did a bit of reading and found out that you have to drain the lifters. so i took it apart again drained the lifters as the manual said and when i put it back together it sounded better but still noisey on a couple of the lifters.
so i decided rather than messing about with the original lifters to just put in some new ones and get it back on the road.
i have just done it today and its still not right. its better but its got a bit of a tapping noise coming from the rear cam. also when i drove it out of the garage and round the corner (on low revs) a couple of times the revs dropped to about 200rpm. i kept my foot on the clutch and let them come back up. i really don't know what to do know, a mate has suggesting re setting the ecu. any ideas?

Perhaps you 'nicked' a valve when putting the head back on and now it is slightly bent which is causing the tapping?? Unsure

Stan.

it could be i'm not suere how much it would take to bend a valve i woudn't have thought it would be that easy. i'm getting really fed up with it now. any one else got any ideas

My money is on a mildly bent valve that isn't seating properly.

The lifters on these engines are very reliable. It's not essential to drain them, but recommended if you've done anything to alter the clearance between the tip of the valve stem and camshaft lobe.

i.e. re-cut the seats or fitted different cams.

Re-setting the ECU won't do anything.

i had a suggestion today from a mechanic that the oil feeder pipe from the sump could be partly blocked and it is not allowing all the lifters to fill up. is it worth checking this because i would of thought that the oil would eventually get through to fill them as it has been run for about 10 min

extremely doubtful, there's a gauze filter on the end of it.

is your oil pressure warning light on? if not it discounts the theory above, I doubt they'd run for a whole ten minutes without oil going round the bottom end bearings either.
