Hi guys this is my 1st post and prior to doing so searched through about 300 FAQ'S, but couldn't see anything. I bought my 306 gti-6 a few weeks ago and have done a few motorway trips and have noticed the final drive ratio in 6th is very similar to 5th. My car revs at 3250rpm at 70mph and i had hoped with 6 gears it would be at a nice 2500rpm at these speeds!! Is this normal or is something up with my box. Would love to know what they are supposed to be like. Presumeably the 6th gear was just to bring the revs down a touch rather than a lot. Is there a mod such as exchanging the 6th gear for a 5th from the diesel?
Cheers Joe.

that is perfectly normal, 6th is not a long cruising gear on the 306.

Parts from another gearbox in the Peugeot range do not fit unfortunately, even fitting the 5th from a diesel wouldn't work if it did fit, as its the final drive that makes the difference between a petrol and diesel gearbox as much as the actual cogs.

you either have to live with it or get a diesel VW to be honest LOL

Just drive a tad slower Razz
I know what you mean though, many times I've wished it was doing 3k at 80ish rather than 4k.

Welcome to the site - there have been a few meets in your area for drives over the moors. Quite a few locals too if you ever need a hand or parts Smile

Cheers thanks for that Adam,

funnily enough i missed the last big meet in Exeter by one day, but now i am on the case i hope to join in on some of the catch ups.

My next job is to tidy up the bodywork and sort out a 2nd key, my 6 was supposed to be scrapped but the dealer made an admin error. So after several months it was traded and i snapped it up its a 98 with 43k on the clock but no history so i am gradually gathering knowledge and history for it!

Cheers again, joey.

The dealer might well be able to give you the history verbally if you ask them nicely, but they won't print it out.

Get the cambelt, water pump and tensioners done asap if you don't know their age.
