Hi, i seem to be losing a helluva lot of water from my cooling system. The car has overheated once or twice over the past few months due to the loss of water, but it seems to be more frequently as of late.

I can't see water dripping from anywhere at all. When i top up the water through the radiator cap its taking a minute or so for the water to make its way round to the bleed point at the top of the radiator on the other side, which seems to be bubbling quite a bit before the water arrives.

There is a very minor build up of pressure sometimes but this make be due to the water loss.

The heating in the car is superhot, the car has not long been serviced and the oil looks fine.

I did however notice a very gentle hissing noise coming from the left of the engine as you look in from the front. It was stopping and starting again, just after i had ran the engine for a while.

Any ideas lads?

It looks fine, the oil is normal, no water getting in to it. Blink

yeah sounds like my xsi check water pump but lack of leaking water / no puddle + pressurized system makes me think head gasket on my xsi few months after water pump went the head went but was blown between cylinder 1 and 2 so water was not reaching the oil but i was losing water fast was going into 1 and 2 then strait out the exhaust valves
head gasket looked original and was very very rotten

have it looked at my friend and sniffer never showed up a thing also mite be down to the water not reaching the over flow bottle tho

parts cost me 200 quid thats including water pump and belt bolts gasket set etc add another

Water pump seems to be working fine. Have opened the bleed point next to the top of the radiator and the water is flowing fine.

Rad seems fine. The only clue to the problem is i can hear an extremely faint hissing noise from the left hand side of the engine, looking into the engine bay.

On top of this, today the car developed an irratic idle. Up to 1500k then down to 500k repeatedly before stalling. Starting back up ok, but problem persists.

Same boat mate. Not going thru as much coolant as you, but can't see where the water is going.

Cars running fine too, apart from the new idle problem!

this was exact same as my car fill it up do less than a mile and no water at all check for water in exhaust boxes shake them about listen for slushing or jack the car up from the front so the exhaust is at an angle water may dribble out or steam while running at normal temp etc because this sounds like the gasket is gone failing that u have a cracked head/block this is just past experience i have had so just advice

Head gasket has gone hence the bubbles in the system, it can take ages for water to appear in the oil especially if the leak is letting coolant into a combustion chamber as you simply put it out of the exhaust

Well getting the compression test done next week instead as the garage was busy but got a pressure test done, it found a few holes in a couple of coolant pipes so will be fixing that this week, also it didn't lose any water on the drive up to Preston last night
