what do you mean how far you can go? what exactly is it you plan to do with the cams? and why replace them? unless they're fubar'd, or you just have money to burn?

If your going to all that effort and you want to go down the route of re-mapping/ chipping you would be better off upgrading your cam's with aftermarket.

You won't see any gaines at all, and you would have been better buying everyone a beer off here just fir the hell of it. Big grin

Before you do anything you need to find the cause of the tapping.
On these engines its very common to have snapped a cambelt and very often they dont get repaired properly leaving them with a tapping noise.

I hope for you this isnt the case but very rarely do these cars tap due to the hydraulic lifters, they are quite reliable usually.

I agree, sounds like you probly have a couple of bent valves still left in there. Smile

No worries.

Do you know why it had the top end rebuilt?

That does sound even more like its thrown a belt and hasnt been repaired correctly to be honest.

The problem is they still run 100%. People usually either just replace the valves that look bent and miss one or two or dont change the valve guides and it leaves them with the tapping noise.
If you can put a video up then I or someone else will quite happily give an opinion, it would be a shame to spend on new lifters and it not cure the problem as they arent cheap.

It doesn't matter if the belt has been replaced religously all its life, if the timing has moved or there was a valve fault this would be your problem to investigate. The car will still drive and perform.

Can take up to around 260 bhp.

"If you replace every standard part like for like" you will still get 167 and always 167bhp"LOL

No point chipping it at all unless you go for the full cams and tb's conversion.

You'll maybe see 180bhp at best with that. No point really considering mine's making 175bhp on standard management!

If you want more anything at a low cost without changing bits and bobs, advance the cam timing slightly. No more power but, according to others, a noticeable 10lbft extra torque (ish). Oh, and fold the back seats down.

Just my two pence.

Have you checked your spark plugs are tight Wizard

You may laugh but its happened to be the cause of tapping on more than one occasion now.

As a quick check on the tapping, first check the spark plugs are in properly and tight. Next do a compression check on each cylinder, if you have bent valves it will show as lower compression on one compared to another cylinder.

If you still think its tappets, I have a complete brand new unopened set of 16 I can sell you which will be a lot cheaper than Peugeot were quoting.

Your best bet is to take a couple of hours out and read through the engine section on here. Will save you a load of money and time. You can increase the torque on a standard engine easily, but not really the power.

Very very unlikely to be the lifters/tappets that are making the noise. Normally its a bent valve or a bent valve guide. Can be a loose spark plug as well, especially as its so cold.

Be very careful on the cam type if you buy larger ones as most will take out the standard pistons - you'll need bottom end work too.
