I've got the GTI-6 up for sale and listed its got a bent valve but presume there are very few mechanically minded who would want to tackle the repair so it looks like I'll have to do it myself, I don't really have the time but if I don't do it then its another car sat around unused.

First question is whether its worth just changing the valve or sticking another good head on altogether. The reason I ask is that I suspect the head has been off before in which case the head will probably have been skimmed, the HG tab at the end shows 3 holes in it which might show the gasket thickness? I'm concerned the head won't take another skim or perhaps I can get away with not skimming it again and just fit a new head gasket?

I'm minded to do the job properly as always so just want to hear feedback from those that have been there and what you'd advise.

if your that worried why dont u just get an exchanged head from carl.

But a machine shop should be able to tell you how much has been skimmed off.

Failing that you could check the valve clearance using plastercine

I was thinking about getting a head from Carl they look good value for money, ideally I don't want to spend more than a valve and a gasket/skim but I also don't want further problems in the future.

you wont just be able to replace one bent valve, needs the seat checking and cutting and the valve grinding to suit.

to check if the head has been skimmed you measure its overall height.

I realise that regarding the replacement valve, do you have a figure for the head height and at what points measured. I presume there is a minimum measurement from the valve to the machined face of the head so it can obviously clear the pistons.

sort of, the maximum safe skim I've been told is 0.25mm.

figure I found in Haynes for an XU head is 157.4 to 157.7mm height.

there is a 0.2mm thicker gasket listed by peugeot for the J4R engine if it has been skimmed.

Hmmm, thanks I'll do some looking once its in bits and see what the general state everything is in. From what I can see through the oil filler cap it looks very clean but there could be all sorts of gremlins lurking!

Toby, as the head gasket hasnt failed you can repair the head and refit and you wont have any bother, alternatively drop it to me and i will sort just what it needs and see whats been skimmed off of it, its cheaper to have yours repaired than a fully rebuilt head.

Thats if you do decide to fix it.

Carl

Thanks Carl I'll have a look at what I'm going to do with it in the new year (already there now!), I think a repair makes sense, I'll whip the head off and have a look.
