no need to run it in with just a new gasket, haynes manual has the torque settings for most things.

if its a digital torx wrench u are using, then after you have turned the bolts 160 degrees, it usually reads abot 122nm- 127 nm, if its not digital, then turn them 180degrees and leave it at that, just done mine with a triple layer steel gasket, and its spot on.

cheers for that, i'm having a nother problem, i have tried to take the head off with the exhuast manifold still attached but it won't quite come out (it needs about 5mm more).
if i take the manifold off first then it will be almost impossible to fit it again with the new gasket. the only thing i can see to do is to remove the top engine mount and move the engine a bit. how has everyone else got round this??

you wont remove the head with the manifold on without major hassle, take manifold off in the car, far easier in the long run

A complete pain in the arse mate, remove the manifold first it is the best solution, they are not that bad to do.

If you drop the engine mount be carefull of the inner cv joint getting crushed between the sump and subframe.

undo the manifold bolts and leave it attached to the front pipe/cat and leave it in the engine bay. remove the inlet maifold and then lift the cylinder head off. clean up the head and block face replace the head gasket. refit the head then refit the mainfolds. thats how i did my mates rallye and had no trouble removing or refiting the head or manifolds

i got it out by removing the engine mount and pulling it forward. it was definately easier than taking the manilfod off while on the car

I did it this way in 2004 as I was advised to do it on this forum. It was easier when the car was on axle stands but I nicked a driveshaft CV boot with the right front suspension arm. I fixed it with a blob of silicone and it's been fine since.

Just wait till you have to put the bugger back in. I have done a few this way but it was serious hard work compared.

Now the head is off, surely the best thing would be to remove the exhaust manifold, re-attach it to the cat, then re-fit the head without?

Sort of associated question - is there room to remove the 6 manifold from underneath the car (obviously without removing the head!)? I kind of assume so, but space looks pretty tight in there and the manifold is not small!

I think you would need to drop the subframe.
