Okay so I've had the car a short while and noticed the coolant seem's to disapear after a while, now its not overheated at all, idles perfect and pulls as hard as these cars can with no misfire or problems at all - I've left the car till its gone cold, opened the filler cap and theres no pressure there - Any ideas people? I fear it'll be headgasket Sad

There shouldn't be pressure there anyway when its cold! Mine used to pretty much empty the rad tank itself through the overflow the level used to sit down in the last ¼ Never went wrong Smile

Heater matrix?
Are you sure you are bleeding it out correctly?

Is there any water or dampness in your passenger side front foot well. If there is your heater matrix is probably shot. How long does it take for the water to go down ?
Is there any funny smell when the heating is on at a high temperature ?

I'm not entirely sure tbh as im always on top of it, anytime it's below where i left it i straight away put more in, hence it never over heating on me lol. not too sure about the footwell, i guess it felt dampish but that was on a cold wet day so not sure as i think the drivers side felt the same, there is a smell evident sometimes when the heaters are on hot?

If the headgasket was gone/on its way out what other signs would there be other than loss of water as theres.

1.no cream on oil filler/dipstick
2.no oil in the water
3.no pressure in the system when i leave it too cool down and open the filler cap
4.no loss of power or missfire etc!

any others to look out for?

Rich.

well you've got the top rad hose (goes from thermostat housing to radiator and tees off to the oil warmer/exchange). In the other direction there's a pipe from the stat housing back towards the heater matrix.

Fair point, could even be the bleed screw on the thermostat housing. Does it have a blue/green tinge to it?

The bleed screw on thermostat housing looks pretty good tbh, not sure about my radiator on the other hand, that has loads of random blue/green tinges all over it although I've sat and watched it idle etc and not seen any leaks?

My hdi is losing water every so often i have to refill the rad expansion tank maybe once every few weeks but it is getting more frequent now and my footwell is continually damp, a funny smell also comes when the temp is high and the blowers on full. Im going to replace the heater matrix as these seem to be the common symptoms. The plus you don't seem to have any head gasket symptoms. However do check the pipes in the engine bay if you are able on the off chance one may be split.

Cheers dude, will give it a good check over, a split pipe is looking likely and i'd be over the moon if it was that simple Smile sadly my luck with cars always turns out to be a major problem Sad

Hey All, Haven't seen any leaks or anything but have noticed that the centre vents now and then shoot white powder out? could that be due to a matrix prob?

White powder? Dust maybe? Dunno

From what you've said i'd assume heater matrix, if it was only a small leak it'd just dribble out but still circulate through, would account for coolant loss and still getting heat.

Get under the glovebox and find the black cover at the back of the dash. If your matrix is leaking you'd be able to feel the wetness around there, that bit cobers the lowest part of the matrix where and dripping would be from.

If it IS your matrix.. welcome to my world Sad

Cheers for that buddy Smile will have a look, Wasnt dust was like white powder, the kind you'd get from anti-persperant deodrant and only on the centre vents, I'll check that out Smile

Think I may have found the problem looked that when the car was stationary there was a tiny hole near the bottom of the rad and dripping water 'slowly' but i guess when cars running and moving it can shoot out? Clearly time for a new rad!

Make sure you get a Nissens ally one, much better quality than standard. Carl (mechanical_repairs) does them still I think. Happy
