I have just drained the gearbox oil and just over 1.5 litres has come out. How much should come out? I know there will be a bit left in there, but I would not have thought that much?

That is what has worried me. I tried tilting the car about using the jack to try and get more oil out but there was none. I have also noticed it is a bit oily around the bottom of the gearbox. Is it normal for oil to find its way down there or could it have been leaking?

When I undid the drain plug, it turned without any effort at all. I was wondering if they are normally like this or could it have been to loose and oil slowly been seeping out?

Not too sure. I have had done about 6000 miles since I bought the car earlier this year. It was quite black.

The previous owner did say it had a clutch change. Would the oil have been taken out to do that job? If so I can dig out his old receipts and find out when that was done.

Well it might have just been a bit low if they didn't refill it after the clutch. Also depends on the car angle and of course the gears aren't going to dry out that much are they just from taking out the plug?

You do lose the oil when you do the clutch yes.

Thanks for the help guys. The clutch was done about 3 years ago, although I have no idea what mileage the car was on at the time. All I have is the receipt for the clutch and a date.

I guess I should just refill it correctly and see how it goes Smile

Did you take the car for a spin and warm up the oil before draining? You will never get the full 2.1 litres out but if you warm it up and have time to leave it dripping for a few hours then you will get a lot out Smile

I did get it warm before hand. But I only left it for an hour dripping. Was this long enough? After an hour it was dripping at about 1 drip every 30 seconds, so I figured that was pretty empty Smile

Yeah that should have been fine to be honest, there was probably a slight leek from the sump plug that let out 0.5 litres over time Yes

Did you replace the sump plug and copper washer with a new item? I had to do this with mine recently as the old one had been on and off too many times Yes

I replaced the washer, but not the plug. Should I have got a new plug too?

Not normally no, just the washer should be fine Yes I got both for mine as the plug had seen better days and the thread was a bit dodgy Yes

Well I have just filled it up and it took the full amount. So the 1.5 litres would have been all that was in there Sad.

When under the car I noticed most of the oil I described on the underside of the gearbox seemed to be mostly around the O/S driver shaft seal. I have replaced this now and am hoping that the oil should stay in now!

The gear change is so much smoother now with the right amount of fresh oil in Smile.

I drained mine today and put 2.0 litres of new oil in but it did not come out the side level plug. But (with 100ml+ clinging to the insides of the box) surely you shouldn't put any more in there than the stated 2.1 litres? I'll ask Pug but logically that should be the end of it(???)

That is correct, don't put in any more else your gearbox will be horrible.

Thanks - I called Peugeot today and they confirmed only put 2.0 litres in there after draining, whether or not it leaks out the level plug.
