Am currently sourcing a new 6 bottom end to stripp and rebuild. I am eventually aiming for a low boost charger setup. Just wanted a bit of advice on what the standard parts will cope with power wise. I will be spending a good 8month to a year building the engine so i dont mine splashing out to uprate.

Bottom End

Immeidate questions are about bottom end. Am planning the replace all bearings, bottom pulley, and flywheel, headgasket with richw parts as well as renewing all piston rings. I would like to know will the standard crank put up with 260-280bhp (thats what im aiming for) and will i need Forged pistons and rods for low boost. Also as ill have it all in bits is it worth having the block decked, and if i did would i need a custom headgasket to keep the valve/piston clearance correct.

Head

Was going to purchase a head after christmas to refurbish. Just a few questions about this. What cam shafts are the others with low boost running??? and also i have my eye on a brand new set of hydraulic lifters at the moment just wondered if it was worth buying them as i know some cams require a solid lifter convertion. And finnally are there any other parts in the head that will require uprating. I was planing on replacing all the valves and valve guides with standard parts.

Any help, suggestion and even photos of your rebuilds, setups would be helpful and much apprieciated. many thabks nick

You shouldn't need to change the lifters at all, solid are only really for high rpm engines 8k+.

As above really, most people are running the low boost on standard engines with few problems. I would suggest speaking to Rich_W at Lynx directly about what you are after.

Nick,

Here are the answers to the questions in you PM.

Bottom End

- I would replace the main and big-end bearings with a heavy duty tri-metal type
- It's worth fitting one of our uprated head gaksets given the cost differential with the OEM item
- You can replace all other parts like gaskets / seals etc with OEM parts.
- The standard rods / pistons will be fine - but my advice would be to change them if there's any chance of you going high-boost in the future, whilst it's apart.
- It's worth decking the block to clean up the gasket face, you don't need to worry about the piston / valve clearance - it should only need 0.002 - 0.003" skimmed off to clean it up.

Head

- Use standard cams
- It's not worth changing the hydraulic lifters, or converting to solid ones. They don't break or wear out, don't change them.
- It's probably worth replacing the valve guides or getting them K-Lined
- Valves should be OK to re-use unless they are bent
- It's worth getting the valves ground and the seats re-cut for perfect sealing, don't lap them in the old fashioned way, get somewhere decent to re-cut them with a SERDI machine.
- Skim to clean up

As for discounts, yes, the more you buy at once, the better price you will get.

A complete low-boost S/C kit in DIY form is approx.
