Fan came on, car quickly overheated, white smoke with odor appeared from the boot area...

What could this be? Head gasket?

It happened while driving, I noticed the fan came on, white smoke from boot, smell, and it overheated quickly. Luckily it was near my destination so I stopped and turned it off within few minutes...

I hadn't started the car yet, will have it towed tomorrow... I think it would start, but don't want to risk further damage.
