Hi guys,

Trying to fit new rear discs and pads, old stuff came off no problems but can't seem to get the new stuff to fit as the piston wont go back far enough.

I have screwed it clockwise for what seems like hours LOL with no joy.

Have tried search but there doesn't seem to be a faq on removal and fitting of rear brakes and no-one else seems to have had this problem.

Any help much appreciated.

you need to push them back as you wind it.

Push harder while turning. The only reason for them not to retract is if they are seized and if that was the case they wouldn't turn.

if they rotate then as said they will go back in , just gotta put some more effort in, try using something as a lever.

Sorted lads - extra elbow grease required, plus mole grips, a pinchbar and an extra pair of hands to force the piston back in.

It was def wound in as far as it would go, but after alot of effort we managed to push it back the few more mm required.

Thanks for all replies.

LOL noobish errors, i wound the piston in and stamped the brake pedal to make sure it was in properly, bloody thing flew off and hit the fence with an almighty thud a few metres away.

Just glad Mat wasn't stood by it at the time, woulda taken his eye out!

You have taken the res cap off yeah ? I always find it helps Wink THen just turn them back in ? could always spray some w*nkers disease on it to try and loosen it up ? - A big pair of mole grips may help ?

Res cap off makes no difference. Do you think it'll need bleeding?

not unless you have pushed all the fluid through the system ? Could always take em off the car (Clamp hoses before you do) then give them a dam good clean possibly have them rebuilt all nice and shiney like - bit pricey mind but hey they will work and look nice Smile

This happened to me even tho the calliper had went all the way back. On one side i still couldnt get both pads in at the same time.
You need to lever the bracket that holds the pads and has 2 bolts holding it to the piston/calliper. lever it away from the disc do this as you put the pad in on the inner-side then do the opposite for the outside. Dunno why i had to do this maybe the bracket bends slightly due to braking..

EDIT: And sixy try soak the piston in penetrating oil/ WD40 and leave it an hour then try rotating it again. if that dosnt work try turning it the other way cause you could be rotating the wrong way in the 1st place. (If you look directly face on at the piston you need to turn it clockwise so if your sitting facing the hub and calliper behind the piston you will need to screw anti clockwise.)

EDIT 2: yea soak it in WD40 and open the bleed screw. The brake fluid and build up of rust and dirt might be to much to rotate against. So give that ago if it dont work then strip the calliper and clean it all up Wink

Dont know if that is my prob scoty, I cant even turn the piston to wind it in. I think its been stuck like this for sometime as the pad on the outside was down to metal and when I took it all apart, the piston was stuck right out with the seal not fully covering it!

Looks like i will need to bleed the little bleeder to be able to wind it in!?

    Just a little update:

Managed to finish work early today so set about getting this piston sorted! Had soaked it in WD40 last night, and applied some more today, bled it a bit too, gave it a gentle tap with a hammer and got the mole grips on it, and finally it released and wound in! Hoorah!!

So then finished that side, bled that one, then bled the other rear side, then got on with the front disks and pads!

Went rather well for the fronts, was very pleased Smile and got it all done, bled the system by about 6:15 this evening!

Only thing now, is I have a dead battery...

One question, does it matter what brake-wear cable plugs into what hole on the fronts?

Many thanks for the very useful FAQ's and advice given in here! Smug Thumbs up
