Hello Everyone,
I have an 8V XSi with an XU10J4Z transplanted engine .
No probs whatsoever, but some noises I keep hearing are bothering me:
- some knock / tap at startup, when cold, probably hydraulic lifters, but the sound goes away. Although not all of a sudden, because it sort of returns for a few beats now and then when the engine is still cold.
- gentle tapping / ticking from the head, even when releasing the accelerating pedal, so cannot be the injectors. Not loud, diagnosed as "typical Pug sound" by a PSA mech - still, disturbing a bit. I went ahead and checked the spark plugs to see if they are tight or not and whilst the plugs are, 2 coilpacks move rather freely, they are probably only held in place by the coverplate - could this be the root of the noise?
- pinking, I think, regardless of fuel grade, mostly under acceleration between 2-3000 RPMs, probably carbon built up in the combustion chamber? Might be that the exhaust is not sealed well?
- oil pressure gauge. When the engine temp is below 90C, everything seems fine. In most cases, when the engine temp rises above 90C, the gauge seems to go haywire, displaying all sorts of readings, even bottoming out (of course it seems to display lower levels only, never higher) - yet the main oil pressure warning light does not come on (it works, can see it at startup)
Any ideas would be welcome.

- Total 10W40 oil, level on dipstick at ~4/5, done 6000 kms, filter is OEM
- spark plugs changed ~12000kms ago, Eyquem
- injectors cleaned
- MPG is at ~28, nothing unusual
- ECU changed because of MAP failure, swapped for "brand new" one

Thanks!

I had this engine in a 205 a while back and it also used to tap on start up when cold. I put it down to a bucket draining whilst it was parked, always did it regardless of what oil or how fresh it was. My brothers 2.0 mi 405 also does it.

Loose coil could be a problem, we've had to mod my brothers coil cover as it wasn't holding one of the coils in securely. Not sure you'd hear it rattle though.

Pinking, lambda or knock sensor?

Pressure gauge, i'd be tempted to try another gauge sender. If your 8v had one fitted that may fit.
Cheers al

Thanks Allan,
Lambda was replaced with the engine and since passed the environmental test. Knock I will test.
The sensor for pressure was infact replaced with that of the XSi, but same result. Maybe a cable issue?

Mr Swampy, would you by any chance have a sample vid with sound of how a healthy S16 engine should run? Would be appreciated Yes

OK, so I managed to grab a vid + sound of the thing.
Be warned, sound quality did suffer - it is less metallic in real life, and not so audible.

Klikk

hmmm, definately tappy mine doesn't sound like that at all.

How long has the conversion been done?
Was the engine sat before the conversion?

Going back a bit i put a c20xe engine into a corsa and that tapped quite well for a good whil until it "settled down"

Conversion was done ~12000 kms ago.
Oil changed twice since.
The conversion included new belts, tensioner, water pump, and new piston bearings (colour coded).
And a new rad Smile

OK, so today another Pug expert took look (listen) to my beloved engine.
Said
1 - exhaust has a leak somewhere
2 - some lifters might need some attention
3 - its a healthy Pug...
Anyway, oil change on Tuesday.
As for the pinging decarboning might be a good idea.
He mentioned several ways (cheap to expensive).
And a shocker came up (raised by a "bystander"): "steam" cleaning the combustion chamber using some water. Sounds kind of dangerous...
