I noticed today sat in traffic my water and oil temperatures started to get much higher than normal so I stopped the car and popped the bonnet but the fans were not runningBlink First time since last winter I've used the car in heavy town traffic so not sure how long this has been an issue, it's fine on the open road.

If I unplug the temp sensor from the thermostat they cut straight in so they are getting power, so why weren't they running when the temp gauge in the car is well over 100 deg c? Does the dash gauge work off a different sensor or something?

There are about 15 wire that go into it and the conector corrodes mine did this and it took me ages to fault find it. only a possibilty tho

Mine does this too - but they do come on eventually.

All the books say the fans should cut in (low-speed) at about 97 - mine is more like 107! Quite worrying as you see it rise, but it does eventually come down.

And yes, there are 3 sensors in the stat housing at the end of the head - one for the ECU (green?), one for the gauge/warning light (blue? - might have these two the wrong way round), and one for the "Bitron" system, which includes your air-con and engine cooling fans (brown). Pulling the lead off the brown one, as you say, make the fans go high-speed constantly.

(Actually, I remember from somewhere that the gauge and warning light work off a different sensor, so maybe the light works off the ECU one, and the other is just for the gauge. Other might know this one.)

If your air-con works, switching it on also kicks in the fans at low-speed, irrespective of engine temp. One good reason to get the system re-charged...

Sorry to hijack this but I also have the same problem. I've not bothered to sort it yet as switching aircon on does the trick as stated although I have noticed that for some reason, when the aircon is switched on, the fans come on at high speed all the time and never low speed. Is this related or a separate issue? Interested to see any other views on above.

Ha Ha, I have exactly the same issue, like you say unplugging the brown plug sets the fans going.

I presume the item Trell is talking about is the circular connector down near the radiator/inner wing - need to have a look at mine.

Never heard of a Bitron unit, is it some sort of electronic control box? What age was your car?

I know of the fan relay box that sits in the V between the two fans but can't picture the item you are on about?

Bit of an update.

Ok located the Bitron unit, its up inside the near side front wheel arch where the two horns and the alarm siren sit. Its not too bad to get to, you need to just remove the plastic guard that goes between the arch liner and the bumper, once removed I found it easier to unbolt one of the horns (13mm spanner) then with a torch you will see the 'Bitron'(electronic control unit for the fans)which is bolted to the roof of the wheel arch by two M5 nuts(8mm socket required).

Next unplug the electrical connector, it has a red part that you pull out while pulling up on the connector, I noticed a couple of the pins on the Bitron unit coroded and gave them a squirt of WD40 and a wire brush up, I also gave the connector a squirt (because of the length of cable you struggle to access this well)and my fan problem is now resolved.

Whilst here I also removed the plugs from both horns and the siren and gave them the WD treatment, even if you have no issue with your fans I would recommend doing this as a bit of preventative maintenance, as the first time you realise your fans aren't working will be next summer when your car starts overheating!

Whilst on a mission I removed the front centre trim panel between the headlights and popped open the fan relay box (sits in a triangular shape between both fans). I noticed the 3 relays in here all had signs of a little corrosion to the terminals so cleaned them up accordingly.

Thanks to Trell for mentioning the control box 'Bitron' unit.
