the new head that came from carl has been fitted and timed up correctly.

no noises other than normal coming from the top end (hurrah, that bit is cured!) but a new noise has reared it's ugly head from the drivers side possibly the water pump? Shock

I have taken the time to make some videos, so hopefully some of you guys can have a listen and let me know what you think. Big grin

Well, we didn't change the water pump as it only went on in may this year, and the car's only done 3k since then. We changed the belt and the tensioner & pulley as they came in the belt kit.

I have a water pump on order from peugeot, along with a new rad pipe (to fit the nissens)... hoping to get in this weekend.

Can't drive it yet because the brakes were shot before it was sat up outside since 1st september! Advisories on the MOT: all discs pitted, handbrake efficiency 18%!!!!!

belt sounds a tad tight there as well as the noise, metal or plastic tensioner?

Well, the one above the water pump (adjustable tensioner) is metal, the one between inlet cam and crank seemed to be plastic, similar to a roller skate wheel.

Used an INA kit from GSF. The last time the belt as done was 3k ago, but we changed it as we covered it in shit. Should I get the old pulley back on it? It was an SKF one, metal.

It's hard to get the tension right without the fancy tool!

Take the aux belt off and run it. If the noise stops its something related to that. If not, its something behind the cambelt cover!

Is it just me but watching the first video near the end when showing the aux tensioner, is it vibrating in time with the tapping?

As Musclebeach said take the aux belt off and run it, that'll help narrow it down.

The aux tensioner was running smoothly, just the video quality with that one.

I'm pretty sure the noise is from somewhere on the cambelt, either of the rollers or water pump.

Any ideas greatfully received, will be tackling it tomorrow morning

I'll stick my neck out and say either a Head or Lifter issue, Just because it's new doesn;t always mean it's OK. Sounds too tappy from that.
But always hard to tell from Video's etc

There's hardly any noise from the top end, can't hear anything from there, it's very prominent from the wheel arch area

Just seen this, a very odd noise, is the lower crank pulley located on the crank woodruff key properley and the bolt tight.

Sounds to fast to be a lifter, can see the washer for the crank pulley bolt is fitted the other way around, no issues in that just make sure its tight and is not rattling the woodruff key.

Ok so is this a logical plan of attack...

1) drop off aux belt to check no noises from that, then refit.

2) take off aux crank pulley to check crank cam pulley, replace after,

3) Release cambelt tension

4) Check tensioner, roller and water pump for any play, wobbliness / noise, and replace as necessary.

5) re-tension cam belt and have another go.

Is there an easy way to check this without buggering up the timing? obviously can pin the cams again, but worried about the crank moving when we undo the bolt... am i right in thinking if it's at TDC, any slight movement shouldn't bugger the valves as should be plenty clear.

Next move is to fit the new rad (and pipe) but peugeout ordered me a ####.23 instead of a ####.Z3, (it's about a foot or so short, and no connector on it or I would have just joined it in the wheel arch) muppets, so have to wait til tuesday for that. Found my water leak, it was a cracked 90deg bend that fits to the 'stat housing. But don't want to drain the water yet til fitting the new rad pipe... nearly finished the bugger!

The timing isn;t set at TDC, More middle dead centre on all piston's, Don;t forget to take no notice of the lower crank pulley too for timing unless it's a solid one

Yeah fella, TDC stuck in my head as my mates dad is a bit old school.

The lower crank pulley with the hole in it had slipped previously, it's more likely to line up with the moon to be honest!!

PROBLEM SOLVED! We were all wrong! It turned out to be the cam belt rubbing on a slightly bent lower timing cover. It was stored in the boot, prob under the exhaust manifold, so a new one of those from peugeot to make it all sweet! Hurrah!
