Which is the better to use? As I know that some people like one kit over the other.

A am after a gates kit and there are two listed. Which kit do I need for my 1999 Rallye. The 136 or the 137 tooth kit, and which is the tensioner number. Gates Part No would be a great help. Thanks all. Which is the better to use? Going by your build code your car would have left the factory with the 136 tooth setup.People tend to favour this older 136 kit due to the more durable appearance of the tensioner as it has a metal outer race rather than the plastic outer race used in the 137 setup. The 137 setup does have the advantage of the tensioner being spring loaded which means it will dampen shock loads on the belt due to sudden engine speed changes (hard acceleration, high load gear changes, hitting the limiter, etc.). It can also be tensioned correctly more easily as it has a built-in tension gauge whereas the 136 belt needs a specialist tension gauge to tension correctly (most use a rule of thumb approach to tensioning the belt in this case). To be honest though, either will be fine and I'd just fit the same as what's currently on. The key to preventing failure is correct tensioning of the belt and changing more often than Peugeot specify. Remember the same setups are used on the Xsara VTS and there are far fewer belt/tensioner failures on that. Why? Because Citroen specified a shorter change interval. ________________________________________ Rich |

Gates guarantee their kits for 50,000 miles from reading their website. Both my cars have them fitted but after two failures, one original Peugeot and a Gates kit that was fitted incorrectly, I'm getting mine replaced tomorrow after 3 years and 40,000 just to be safe.________________________________________ S Reg Diablo standardsSpec SORNEDR Reg Nile standard spec written off then repaired X Reg Astor in need of TLC R Reg Nile to restore Set of Lions to fit. |
