The cars been smoking quite badly for a few weeks and seems to be getting worse.

Decided to get it compression tested and the results were:

Cylinder 1 : 180
Cylinder 2 : 180
Cylinder 3 : 180
Cylinder 4 : 210

So it looks as if there's a problem with cylinder 4 and the mechanic was pretty sure that its the piston rings.

Just want to make sure that he's definately right before I go and spend around

210 is a good figure, it's the 180s for the other 3 that would have me more worried. I did mine last year and mines on 115k and it came out at 210, 210, 210, 215. Not sure what healty readings are but I think they should all be within 10% of eachother.

I wouldn't be concerned about that result one bit, when does it smoke though? on throttle, off throttle, cruise?

It smokes mostly on throttle over most of the rev range. Seems to get worse once the engine had warmed up.

Bare in mind that it is an XS so the figures might be slightly different from a GTi-6/Rallye

Sorry should have mentioned the full details. It's a 1.8.

It's got the following modifications:-

GTi-6 inlet manifold
GTi-6 exhaust manifold
Decat with straight through pipe

It's also burning oil like no tomorrow, used about 4L in a week and a half! The spark plug from cylinder 4 was drenched in oil so that was the reason the mechanic thinks cylinder 4 is suspect

imo its cyl 4 aswell the 180 your refering too is probably fine.
the reason cyl 4 is reading high is there is oil leaking through the rings and its being compressed making a better seal causing a higher reading if you get me.
to try out my theory try a couple of drops of oil in a good cyl put the compression tester on it and watch it read higher than before.
( be carefull not to put too much oil in as it will wreck the compression tester filling it with oil i no i did it lol )

So does this mean its the rings that need replacing if oil is leaking through?

hiya mate... not nice when an engine's burning oil. before you go stripping the block, have you thought about the valve stem seals? they could be shot, and they're easier to replace than the rings.

I was told that the car would only really smoke on start up if it was the seals..?

It suffers from a really slight misfire at around 3k revs if it's being driven steadily if that gives any clue

I took it on a dual carriageway today and once I was in 5th doing around 60 it was fine. Put my foot down and took it to 90 and there was no smoke at all

^^^ i'm a little confused as to what you're symptoms are now. but i've gathered that the car is burning oil. whatever the problem turns out to be, seals or rings, you're looking at an expensive repair bill cos as welshpug said the head has to come off.

i'd go into more detail but i'd need more detailed symptoms. sorry i can't be much more help. i hope you get it sorted.

Deepak
