Hi All
Please can you help me out need to take my Head off my gti6 98 ASAP as belt has snapped and am going to get a service exchange one from Carl. I Have removed all required bolts that holds it in, removed all pipes and cables and have split the exhaust from the manifold down with the exhaust manifold still attached to the head however head wont come out as the manifold hits the block and the pipe part hits the bulkhead. I have looked at removing the manifold but you just can't get to it??

Really struggling and need any tips or advice there is obviously a nack to it just need to know what to do???

Cheers Guys Josh

Head cannot be removed with ex manifold attatched. People say it can be done but i have tried and found it to be impossible and you will damage things trying. Whip the maniold off the head, its not too bad.

if your head is unbolted and all ancillaries are off, then rotate your head clockwise, this will give you enough space to remove your ex mannifold, and it is possible to remove head with ex mannifold on, you need to remove the metal water pipe that runs along the back of the block, and stand on the car to remove the lot complete, total tart tho.

It is possible, you should have seen Carl's face when I asked him if there was any easier way of doing it with manifold attached, he said take it off first! He told me you can get to most of the nuts from underneath with long extension and a universal joint. (13mm socket)

If it was like mine, with limited tools, no garage or anything to lift it higher than a jack, the studs and nuts were a f*cker to get out, so it was easier to remove it with them intact, engine off mount, lowered down and pulled as far foward as possible.

I wouldn't really recommend it, but it can be done.

As for re-fitting, I bought new nuts and studs (roughly

Cheers Jimmah that helps an awful lot. In terms of rotating it you can move it any way you want to in any direction but it won't come out. Looks like we has exactly the same problem though jimmah and i'm pretty local to you. I just need the exchange head new cambelt and she's good to go, can't wait.

I have a workshop but still have limited tools so things are hard but i will try to remove manifold nuts first then failing that i will resort to the engine mount method. Cheers for the help guys will keep you updated.

Another thing you could try, is to turn it enough so you can get to the manifold studs a bit easier, you will need a friend so you don't damage too much.

And a lot of patience. Make sure you take your time, it's worth it!

I've been doing mine on my mate's mum's front garden, on a bit of a hill, grassy, stony, nasty to get under the car! LOL

Whatever you choose to do, I would recommend an old t-shirt in place of the head gasket between the head and the block to cushion against scratches to the surfaces.

We got mine all back together today, and it started first time! It's been a month since we started, one day a week and had it going at lunchtime today! RESULT! Big grin

Still some rattles going on from somewhere, so tomorrow will be inestigating them. Carl's exchange head guaranteed not to tap, and we were so careful with the timing pins etc, so very much doubt it's that. Crazy

Anyway, good luck to you fella! Big grin

maaybe too many smileys in that one! Ninja

Just want to make sure that the marks from the valves on the pistons are ok. Here are some pics. I dont wanna put it all back together to find that its going to explode as soon as i drive it. Your advise as always would be appreciated.

Jimmah did you get on the road all ok?

Are those Semi Circle Divets around the edges of the pistons there normally then? That might be normal i just thought it created those dents when the belt snapped and the valves have hit the pistons. I thought pistons were completely smooth and flat??

Na, the semi circular valve reliefs are normal. Might be worth cleaning it up a little and seeing if theres any damage.

Yes, she lives again!! Taking it easy at the moment, keeping my eye on oil and water levels, and remembering all my brakes are new and to stop earlier!!

No I wasn't in Guildford, I was at work.

As for the above, carefully remove most of the shit on the pistons (turn crank so they lift flush to the top(22mm socket)) with a large flat bladed screwdriver. Remove the crap from the valve dents by running small screwdriver through. i then used a fine grade sand paper to remove the rest. That's up to you. Lightly oil the two cylinders which are down, with a rag.

Turn the crank again so the other two pistons are up, and repeat the above process.

IMO most important thing is to oil the bores, and keep them covered with an oily rag to protect from moisture.

Jim

It may be possible to take head off with manifold on but then you have to lower engine, remove exhaust bolts and springs and then you still have to unbolt it from the head on the bench. If you unbolt it in the car its far less work and time in my opinion

I work mainly evenings and weekends, so it's unlikely for me to get to any meets!

I also have a small fear of the M3, wrote a car off up by 4/4a, wasn't fun!
