I got a funny feeling this is going to open a huge can of worms, but here goes.

What does the filter actually do and do you really need it.

Will the car run ok with out it and what do you do with the brown thing the ecu connects to

It absorbs petrol fumes when the car is standing and then lets the engine burn then when next started. I think the plug activates a valve to release these fumes.

correct me if I'm wrong but doesnt charcoal become saturated after so long, therefore becoming ineffective? Dunno

I'm interested in this as I'd like to remove mine if I can, just unsure on the sensor part

The vapour is burnt the next time the engine is run.

Why do you want to remove it?

I looked into doing this last week, apparantly you can remove it as long as you leave the solenoid connected. If you remove the solenoid you will need to put a 1.2Kohm resistor in its place Otherwise the ECU will read a fault.
