Iv decided to give changing the top mounts a go. But iv made the fatal error of loosening all bolts at the top so the strut has just come away. Ive undone the hub bolt but because obviously the strut has come off i cant actually get the blasted thing off. I am having difficulty with the spring as its decided to curve on me. So when compressing the springs do i have to attach from top to bottom or can i attach from say the 2nd tier to the bottom so i can angle the strut out and it will still work. Ive made a complete hash of the whole thing, so any help ir ideas to complete this would be much appreciated. |

The best advice I can offer is be careful you don't kill yourself. Springs/spring compressors are not the sort of thing you can afford to mess around with. ________________________________________ You feed beefburgers to swans. I appreciate your concern my man but that doesnt answer my question. The springs arent tort or anything. If i can put the compressers a little bit lower then i can probably get the thing out. Just need to know whether i can do that or not? |

Put the spring compressors as close to the top and bottom of the spring as you can. Compress them evenly on both sides and do not remove the top nut until there is no pressure on the top mount and the springs are held securely. ________________________________________ You feed beefburgers to swans. considering you couldn't jack the car right i would avoid springs and topmounts like the plague sorry but i have seen springs go through garage roofs so i would step away. they need to be as close to both ends as possible as cress says________________________________________ 306 rallye reproduction decals (full sets/individual decals) | 306 b-pillar textured vinyl weatherstrips306 slam panel esso stickers | 306 yellow / orange / pension fund red side door badges gti6 inlet manifold badges | 306 rear boot badges (p2/p3) winner of Extraction of toys from prams with outstanding vigour award 2009 [source: gti6 owners club] |

I take it youve got a compressor on both sides of the spring?Your probably better taking the entire strut out with the hub attached now, if you can get the driveshaft nut of that is. As stated be very careful though ________________________________________ 1997 Black GTi6smithers205 at hotmail.com |

As stated be very careful though This may seem like a good idea and it is - IF the driveshaft splines arent seized! Ive mushroom shaped the end of a nearside driveshaft before now attacking it with a sledge hammer. It took a pounding believe me but did shift in the end! I then had to grind down the end of the shaft with an angle grinder to pass it through the hub You have been warned! ________________________________________ Team Peugeot Sport 308 GtiBlack T'99 Gti - may she rest in peace - written off in a shunt on the A329m |

instead of taking the hub off with it, why not just split the shock from the hub and take it all this way?have you fixed the garage roof yet ________________________________________ andrew315rawson@live.co.ukMoonstone phase 7 gti6 My Project thread: http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=119992&page=1 |

u dont need to split the hub, just undo the pinch bolt at the bk of the shock and lift the shock out of the hub, you need to undi the braket thats bolted to the hub which holds the abs sensor and the brake hose in place. shoodnt have undone the top 1st until complete strut is out of car, once you have the complete strut unit out, then put your spring compresors on, and remove top mount, replace, and then refit complete strut unit. crazy man.... dont kill yourself, a loaded spring is seriously powerfull, and will brake your jaw.________________________________________ denwar |
