Hi all,
Just a quicky as I have not had a chance to have a look in the light yet.

Driving back home today, the water temp sits normal when driving, but when I hit a bit of traffic, the temp starts to rise to around 100, then upto 107/110 before coming back down to around the 100 mark and then will rise and fall while in traffic until I get moving again which cools it back to around 90.

Had a quick search and I take it that my low speed fan has packed up most likely?, as the other fan is obviously cutting in at 107 to cool it down a bit.

Anyone think this is right before I go hunting for fans, or any other idea's??

I know what your saying guys, don't make me out to be a complete tard! LOL
But my temp would get to around 100 in traffic and not fluctuate from there until moving again and it would drop back to normal temps.

As it is atm, in traffic, the temp will rise and fall between 90 - 110 about 3-4 times in 5 minutes.
Whatevers happening, it's not normal, and think I have only ever seen the temp get to 110 once in 7 years with the 6.

Water and oil are both fine btw

this is exactly what happened to me, but dont know if sorted it yet as still rebuilding the engine bay. If it happens again with all my new bits on, it'll more than likely be the fans, or relays, as i will be chucking a new fan temp switch (brown one on stat).

sounds normal mate,

unplug the brown sensor the fans will come on slow speed then full speed after a few seconds.

Bare in mind that them temp gauges aren't always accurate.

doesn't sound normal to me but nothing drastic

you might need a new rad and coolant change, check the fans and the thermostat.

with nissens rad and some water wetter it never went above 100 even in traffic.

what you describe is probably normal average operation though.

mines the same chap, tried everything to resolve this problem, new nissens rad, fresh coolant, bled the system twice, had the head rebuilt, the list goes on...been doing it for about 9 months now so i know its not the gasket. Just remove the brown sensor behind the drivers headlight and bridge pins 1 and 3 to control the fans manually using the air con button in the car....thats assuming your cars aircon dosent work of corse...lol

Sounds the norm. try changing the coolant, flushing out the radaitor and blowing out the crap stuck between the ins. might make a wee bit diffrence

Sounds very similar to my problem and it is most likely that 1 of your fans is not working.

There is not a low speed fan, its set up so that when the thermostat hits 97c both fans come on in series so they only get 6volts . If one fan is not working then the curcuit wont work (broken curcuit). This is why the temp goes sky high and when it reaches 107c then the curcuit changes so the fans change to a paralell curcuit both fans get 12volts ( high speed fans), but only 1 will work because one of them is foobered.

Best thing to do is to test both your fans. Obviously pulling the brown plug should make both of them go on at high speed ( parallel set up). I got a fan for

Cheers for all the replies guys,
Will have a look tomorrow morning for the fans first as my gut tells me thats the most likely cause.

If I had known that the balljoint on my icecream van would snap and grind to a halt and leave me stranded for 4 hours, I would not have bothered and could have got the car sorted instead Roll eyes

Right then, just had a look and it seems that my car only has the one fan but cowling for 2 fans Unsure is this normal on a phase 1 as I'm sure everyone else has two fans on the rad??

Let her run to warm up, get upto 97 and no life from the fan, once it hits 107, it cuts in as normal and temps drop back down as they should.

Does this mean that my single fan should run at different speeds depending on the heat or could this be a sensor issue as it's not cutting in early enough for normal opperation??

    Cheers all, Mark Smile

    Hi again guys,
Not had a chance to look at the fans until today.

Fans do not come on until temps hit 107, so obviously the low speed is not kicking in at all.

Went to double check by unplugging the brown CTS sensor and my phase 1 does not have the sensor fitted Sad

Anyway, checked fuses 33 & 34 in engine compartment and they are fine so thats the easy parts checked now.

Any suggestions in order as to most likely cause?

Relay, bitron, motor, or something else??

Cheers guys, I have had a good ol search and am still a bit lost Roll eyes

"Water wetter" is an additive that lowers the surface tension of the water so it absorbs more heat - or something along those lines - apparentlyWink

Sounds like the low speed fan resistor has died. If you look on the fan housing somewhere you should find a metal canister which is the resistor used for slow speed. when they fail they tend to fail open circuit so the fan doesn't work until it switches to high speed.

I believe it's the same resistor used for the dim dip headlights on a phase 1. I had a quick look for a pic of one so you know what i'm talking about but couldn't find one so I will try and take a pic of one of mine tomorrow.

Cheers Dan, that would be great Big grin
A friend did mention that it could be a resistor, but would only go looking there if I had to take the front off to check the relays.

I take it, I could get another same rated resistor and solder it in place of the old one ?

Either that or new fan time I guess Roll eyes

It won't need soldering it just unplugs. I'm not entirely sure where they are located on the fan housing as it was a few years ago I removed mine to fit a double unit for the a/c I was fitting at the time but I believe they are easyish to get to as they are in the air flow to keep them cool.
