My oil pressure gauge has been slowly reading lower and lower at idle. It's seems to be fine once the revs are above about 1200rpm but it's worrying me slightly. Oh this is once up to operating temps.

The low oil pressure light has never come on when the engine is running only when it stalls or before I start it, But I know it's serious if the oil pressure gets low enough to bring that on.

Could it just be the sender/gauge playing up or could I be heading for big bills in the near future?

Oh I have been using Total 10W40 and a genuine Peugeot oil filter. I may start using 10W50 if I can find any that doesn't cost a fortune. Possibly going to change the oil next week as I can't remember how many miles it's done since I last changed it (no more than 5k though)

It does have a small oil leak which as far as I can tell is coming from the dipstick tube join to the block (down the back of the engine on the S16) or it may be coming from the crank shaft seal, I'm not 100% sure, I was going to get it checked next month when it has it's MOT as if it's the crank seal I will need to get the cam belt etc. changed too.

have you checked the oil level, could just be low level from the leak you mention?

I haven't checked it the last couple of days but last week when I checked it, it was about half way between the 2 marks. The oil pressure has been showing as low at idle for a while but I was told it was ok but the last couple of days it's been even lower so it's got me concerned, I hope it's the gauge but knowing my luck it'll be something expensive. I will check the level tomorrow and see what happens.

ok checked the oil level today, it has lost a little since last week but not loads, its about 2 3rds of the way down from the max level. I went to top it up then realised I haven't got any left Doh SO i'll try and get 5 litres during the week and change it. Then I will see how the pressure is and report back. I have got another oil pressure gauge I can screw into the block if I really have to so I may try that too and see if it says the same as the standard one.

OK so I think it may be something bigger than the gauge Sad

I forgot to update this but when I changed the oil it came out almost like water (it was hot at the time as I didn't let the engine cool down) but it also stank of petrol.

The new oil has helped with the pressure, however I've been trying to work out why the fuel is getting into the oil.

I checked the compression and all 4 cylinders are at 190/195 psi at operating temp which is lower than it used to be (210psi per cylinder) but I was doing the test on my own so I may do it again with the help of someone else. I have noticed that it is sometimes struggling to start when it's not been used for a couple of days.

I've checked and all 4 coil packs are working and I've also unplugged each injector in turn and it definitely runs on 3 cylinders but I do have a spare set of injectors I can try in case they are leaking but I would of though that would only show up as one of the cylinders rather than all 4 of them being lower on compression.

The car felt low on power today and the oil breather stank of petrol again so I'm guessing the piston rings or the block has worn excessively (although it's only supposed to of done 73K).

Is there any other way i can work out exactly what the cause is? It's got it's MOT soon so I can see it failing on the emissions not to mention costing me a fortune I haven't got soon Sad

Could try a few drops of oil down the cylinder and compression test again, would be a good indicator of worn rings

Right well I put a few drop of oil down each cylinder and did the compression test again and yes you guessed it the pressures went back up Sad

So that means best case scenario it's the rings worst case its the cylinders need honing/ re boring + oversized pistons? Sad

Can I change the rings leaving the engine in the car and just taking the sump and head off and removing each piston or am I going to need to remove the whole engine? What I'd like to do is remove the whole thing and get the block bored out and make a bigger more robust bottom end out of it but that's not going happen any time soon Sad

Does the guage go up when you turn the lights and heated rer window on? sounds daft but they normally do and I'd not worry to much about it.
Ring wise is really a engine out job as the bores need honing but on S16 engine's this normally results in a scrap block due to excessive bore wear, but a rebore and new pistons would sort that one out,
I;ve scraped loads of S16 block's trying to find one that would hone out within limit's
