Hi All the cambelt on my 6 has just snapped, in terms of getting her running again would a new head with guides and cams etc be an easy repair or is it the replacement engine route i need to go down?

depends what you class as easy, some people struggle to jack a car up, whereas others find engine rebuilds and fabrication easy....

probably easier to find a replacement lump. but do the cambelt on that before it goes in.

Well i have my own workshop and regularly mess about with cars i have done a few engine conversions and swaps but never rebuilt one in detail. I read the post about the guy that could'nt even jack up his own car.ooooo the wheel won't go down!Lol now that is stupid!!!
Was just wondering whether its worth doing or do these engines shatter when the belts let go. Need detail as to what normally needs replacing belt snapped as going round a roundabout at about 15mph.

Only way to tell is to get the head off. if its just bent valves then you might get away with a new head ( speak to car aka mechanical repairs) but if its dropped a valve then be easier and cheaper to drop a new engine in.

Hope this helps

It will depend if you've got the tools, and skill to rebuild it,

I was doing 20mph and stopping when mine snapped the other week, i bent 14 valves, i have now received the head back from the engineers and about to start the rebuild.

I have the Tools and really want to Learn so i think i'm just going to give it a go your photo helps alot though. I'm told as long as they haven't dropped it will be ok to do. Do you have anymore pictures or tips on what to look for to diagnose wether i can replace the head or it does need a new lump.

you'll know if it needs a new lump it'll be mashed. Take the head off and get an exchange one from Carl on here. That way you have the best chances it won't tap when reassembled as seems the guides can be an issue as well as valves so well worth getting one you can trust

remove the head then take it to local engineers if in doubt, they'll tell you condition of guides etc before buying a recconditioned head

My cambelt hadn't snapped, but I wanted to get rid of the tapping, and replace a few other bits and iron out some other problems. So a basic overhaul.

With little mechanical experience, with a friend, we have stripped off the head, and other bits in 2 days of lazy work. We exchanged the head in leicester last week, and finally today we got the bores nice and clean, and got the head and a new cambelt back on the car.

Total price so far around

Simple repair in theory, Whip the head off and see what damage has been done.
There's a couple of local place's that do heads for these spot on so no need to go somewhere 150 miles away for a recon head which I guess is outsourced anyway.
