When I went to pull away at some traffic lights not long ago the car felt almost as if it just lost power for a couple of seconds like it was being strangled. As soon as a felt it I thought I had put it in 3rd instead of 1st and I put the clutch in and went to change gear. It seemed like when I pulled the gear stick back that it was in the 1st position. I put it back in gear and all was fine. I just assumed that it had to have been in 3rd and didn

Sorry mate it could be lots of things causing it. ICV, MAP sensor, Lambda, CTS all i can say for certain it will be electrical. Get the car plugged in and have the error codes in the ECU read might throw some light on where to start.

Mine does the same occasionally and i just ignore it and put it down to it being a GTi6 Thumbs up

Sounds stupid but check tightens of battery terminals. Sometimes if they are loose the torque/push of pulling off pushes the batery back in the tray and terminals can lose contact if they are loose.
