Not too sure what thread to post this is as I'm not sure what the fecking noise is. Basically, I've noticed very recently that when I come off the throttle there is a noticable click / tap sound in the engine bay (audible both with windows up or down). It doesn't do it when I rev the engine from standstill or when I drop the clutch whilst driving, generally it only happens when the load comes off the engine i.e. when I take my foot off the throttle on anything over 2-3k revs and this happens in all gears. At first I only noticed it when changing gear in high revs but now I notice it most of the time when I take my foot off the throttle. If I dab the throttle when driving, enough to put the engine under load, I hear it every time.

All I can think of is a possible driveshaft fault or engine / gearbox mount issue but as I've only owned the machine 3 months and am not too well versed on home mechanics I thought you guys might have a better idea before I start spending wads of cash!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Remove the top engine mount and i bet you there is a crack round the retained nut that the mount screws into. If so, just get a plate welded in and job done. Mine had the same and cost me

Nice one, I will have a look this weekend and hope its relatively straighforward to sort. I jacked the car up last night and checked driveshafts / gaiters etc. nothing untoward there so mounts was all that I had left in my tiny mind. Is this a sign that the car has had a hard life? Ive only had it three months and the bills are slowly racking up, looks like I'm going to have to work alot harder to fund the beast.

Spot on diagnosis Aaron6, thanks. Just had the garage weld a plate over the crack, as suspected. Only charged me

Also there was some "Chocks" for sale on here not too long ago, made to order from a member, they just go in either side of the top engine mount and makes it more stable / less movement so should make it last longer this time!

Aaron, do you reckon I could have a similar thing to this? I have a knock which was subtle before but has got louder recently but it only happens when I set off from a stand still and again when Im slowing down to a standstill. Its one knock upon setting off and one knock upon stopping.

When sat in the drivers seat the sound appears to be coming from the front end somewhere.

Can you make it knock if you come on and off the throttle rapidly?

Stan when Im setting off I tend to notice it more at lower revs/ setting off slowly. Ive been listening out and it tends to not happen when setting off with high revs.

I'll give repeatedly hitting the throttle a go later on my way home if I get the space. If I recall it doesn't knock when I do this - just jerks the car around a little but then again I wasn't testing it for this before.

I was at first thinking suspension but it doesn't happen mid drive - no matter how bumpy the road is etc. Only happens at start and stop

It sounds like it could be, however you'll know more after testing it later. Smile

Cool I'll try that on my way home and if it happens I'll get the car round to my dads at the weekend and get looking around the engine mount as suggested above.

Tried the quick dabs on the throttle and the odd time I got a knock but not everything just once or twice but was a lot of traffic so I couldn't try it much

Definitely sounds like you should take a look at the top mount then, at least to rule it out. Yes

I suspect it's probably cracked. Sad
