Thinking about investing in one of these soon!
I'm guessing the gearbox had to come completely out for this? If so is there anything worth replacing, or possibly uprating while it's being done..?
Would a job like this best be done by a specialist..? Or could any half decent mechanic do it?

can be done with the box in situ, strap the engine forward and drop diff casing off

Easy to do like that, if you do take the box off however, it's the ideal time for a nice light flywheel, some new clutch frok bushes and a little grease on the fork, a crankshaft oil seal and a new clutch while you are at it as you might as well once you have gone that far! LOL

i heard something about having to get new bearings for the diff for these, and also the possibility of having to machine the diff housing to fit the new bearings.
or somthing along themlines????

sure i read somewhere on here someone had to grind/modify something to get their new diff to fit?? Dunno

Miles told me that on some of the early gearboxes you had a shim that went at one end of the diff to preload the conical bearings to the correct setting, and that you had to make sure that if the shim was there then you had to put it back when you refitted the new diff. As for the diff bearings, for what they cost to do it's not really worth transfering the old ones accross is it?

my 6 is r reg 1998... Would I run in to these problems, having to skim the casing and wot not?
As regards to the clutch, would it be best to upgrade or just get a brand new standard one..?

I dont think your box will have the shim on the diff bearings and it shouldn't need any material grinding out for a quaiffe diff. Its usually only some plate diffs that need a bit grinding out for clearance. Unless your running mega power you cant beat a standard valeo clutch in my opinion.

The box's as with most thing's Pug might need a shim it may not, If the shim is there doing in place is a mare I would think, only done them on the bench.
New diff bearings are a must, Plus getting the old one's off normally destroy's them anyway.
