just had my back axle mounts done should the back end still be stiff

Do you mean rear subframe mounts? They tighten the back end up, but they only provide a slight amount of movement between the rear beam and the car.

But from the fact you said "still be stiff" i'd be more concerned about knackered shocks or possibly even trailing arm bearings seizing.

If it is knocking, it sounds like the bearings have gone in the rear beam. Sad

A rebuild kit is only like
