What might cause low water temp?
My car always ran at a steady 80deg on the gauge when in motion, but recently it only reads between 70-75deg even when the engine is hot (oil temp reaches 80deg)
And still suffering from unsteady idle and occasional misfire under acceleration.
And the rev counter isn't working... is there a connection?
Thanks

Thermostat stuck open would explain the low temperature. Yes

That was my initial thought, but surely it would still get up to temperature eventually?

I wish mine ran that cold perminently! Quit whining about it! lol..

Seriously, check the thermostat. If its open there will be a constant flow of coolant hence the cooler temps.

Cheers!
Was just concerned in case there was any way that although the water temp gauge was reading low, that the actual engine temp could have been much hotter.

Do change it though as running too cool will cost in fuel consumption by running too rich for too long on start-up and there is also a risk of bores wearing excessively through being petrol washed during prolonged cold running. If you remember cars with a manual choke or old VWs with defective auto choke carbs they could kill engines.

No, not really, can stay really cold.

mine runs at the lowest point, and when sat in traffic goes upto halfway point , always runs really cold? will changing thermostat make it run warmer? and improve fuel economy?

A working thermostat will only let the water out of the engine at 82 degrees and above. The temperature is measured on the other side of the thermostat to the engine, so if it is not getting to the 80 mark then chances are its stuck open

As a side note lower temps are nothing to do with the radiator - while aluminium ones do provide better cooling, the thermostat will still let water back into the radiator at 82 degrees.

Im not entirely sure the implications of running cold but I would guess that the car is designed to run at a certain temp and running cold cant be good for the components in the long run

engines require a richened mix to start cold and this is achieved by what for running under load is an unnecessary degree of overfuelling which should reduce when the engine is within it's normal operating range. The stat is there to restrict water flow to the rad until it gets in range. n0 Stat or one stuck open will delay warming up use more fuel and potentially wash oil from the bores. The extreme effect is illustrated by the woman who took her new (Then in the 60's0 Mini back to the supplier to complain about the poor economy and was found to drive with her handbag conveniently swinging from the choke control. Being ancient has some benefits!!
