I have a tappy engine in my GTI6. Is it easy enough to replace the tappets myself, or just get it in a garage and have someone sort it out for me? Has anyone else gone through this process, and could you give me an idea of time / cost etc?

Is it worth a top end rebuild?

get it looked at , most likely not the tappets but a snapped cambelt , that damaged the valves and was repaired wrong. Yes

Have a search for 'tapping' Yes

As said above a tapping noise is common where the cambelt has failed and the repair work has not been done correctly. Most likely you still have bent valves in the head or possibly worn valve guides.

Excessively worn lifters are rare on these engines.

Well having read a bit further into this i would really like to get it looked at. Is there anywhere local to Southampton area that could do this? and what are the likely costs?

As said it will be a badly repaired head, I;ve had a few which have been repaired badly and when check found even some valves are still bent, Cost wise it really does depend on what needs replacing, Ball park figure to start from is circa

And it should be a priority cos a tapping engine is a ticking time bomb if it fails it can take the whole engine with it. You could just remove the head and buy one from Carl Mechanical_Repairs he does them on an exchange basis saves time and effort and probably cheaper than having yours repaired. Thats the way i would go.
