Was cruising down the M11 yesterday and had an engine light come on (not the STOP light, everyone knows that doesnt mean anything Big grin) and then noticed the car wasnt pulling so well - got into London and it was running on three, not ideal Unsure

Got home OK (they are still pretty quick on 3 Big grin) and whipped the plug cover off today to find the following:







Now Im no electrical expert but that looks pretty melted to me, the wiring doesnt strike me as standard Pug either, can anyone confirm? Shoukld I be looking to replace the whole lot or just the melted bits? Dunno

never seen one like that before, Wiring is all OE thou and looks unaffected bar the plug end, if it was a wiring fault logically speaking the wires would have melted so fingers cross it was a coil fault

Crikey mikey! Never seen or heard of that happening before?! Guess it just shorted inside the coil??

Thats was my thought, its not like the engine was extra hot or boiling oil had been poured over the bonnet or owt Big grin

Not saying anything about French electrics but I can install better than that, and Im colour blind and missing 8 fingers (not really). Cherrs for input :up:

I had oneburn out... Peugeot sent it away to be analysed as it was unheard of by them. Never heard back from them. So it has happened before and I had no more issues just replacing the burnt one. Whole part of it was charcoal!!!

Mine are neatly wrapped and all of them are on these engines so I'd say they've been tampered with at some point. Also the bolts act as the earth for each coil pack and those look absolutely filthy. They only need a small crack for them to ark out and s**t themselves Yes

I replaced the old bad wiring on my engine with new wires and connectors.

That's a fair point that is the OE wiring loom But it should be mostly contained within a plastic housing that bolts to the front cam cover with 2 10mm bolts. So someone's messe about with it at some point but wouldn't cause the coil to s**t itself.

There also a chance that the injection driver in the ECU is damaged due to the high current.....

How many ignition drivers are there in the ecu? is it one per coil pack?

The ones on the right are for ignition the ones on the left for injection.

Yes this is the one, they don't fit directly on the coilpacks you have to cut off the lower notch on the connector of the coilpack otherwise they don't fit.

Personally I'd be off to a scrappy to find a plug that fits without butchering stuff, they are colour coded for the keyways, of course fit a length of new wire and a pair of terminals.

The lovely crspares is going to get me one out and Ill just splice it into the existing loom, bit worried about the ECU now as well but guess I wont find out until Ive got a non melty one on there.

Need to get it sorted as Im forced to use my 4.6 V8 Rangey to get to work and back while the pug is busted, a month of this and I could buy another GTI6 with the fuel Ive burned LOL:

Finally managed to get the coilpack and the wiring through, put them on at weekend and seems to be fine, no ECU damage :phew:

I found the wire for pack number 1 had gone through the sheathing in a couple of places though, might be worth casting an eye over if your wiring looks like mine before anyone else catches fire Smile

I suspect you hadn't gapped your rings correctly or maybe you were using some NGK Super-Iridium plugs and the spark was so efficient and intense it burnt it all out

Dont know if taking p**s but .......... car had done 185,000 miles like that so I doubt it was anything Id done LOL
