I've heard good things about scratch x so i bought some. However when i got it home it seemed very similar to the autoglym paint restorer i normally use so I've barely touched the scratch x. Should i start with the scratch x when the ag stuff runs out or is one better than the other?

what are your trying to do with it? Remove a scratch, remove swirls? Hand polishes are pretty much useless on modern day finnishes as the paints are so hard. You will need to generate huge amounts of energy to break down the particles in polish before they start to do their job. Best way really is with a machine polisher. Check out http://www.outopia.org for all the information you will ever need on car detailing!

clay will not remove scratches unless it is a very hard clay. What clay basically does is remove dirt from the nooks and crannies in the paint surface.

In short jet wash, wash with soap and water, jet was agen soap and water it, jet wash and dry with microfibre towels or chamois.

Then clay the car folding the clay as you go.

then T-cut

Then do the megs 3 stem paint system or

super resin it, and deep crystal shine.

I then wash mine again to get rid of any white polish debris and then add a topcoat of wax!

Im after removing swirls. Going to get it machine polished when I can, just wondering.
Problem with T Cut is the particles dont break down, or so Ive heard. But then again Spitfire says that you cant break any particles down by hand so I dunno!

Sorry, I should have said you can break the particles down but it will take a long, long time and the results really are not satisfying.
Twice a year I use my Meguiars Random Orbit Polisher (these cost £150 don't confuse with the cheap thing you get at Halfords) with Sonus polishing pads, Sonus FX polishes and wax it with Autoglym High Definition wax. It takes about 6 hours so you can imagine how long it would take by hand!
The results though are well worth it and next time I do it I shall have to take some good pics!

I have found that AUTOSMART EVO FINE is extremely good at removing light scratches and scuffs. By hand or machine.

My halfords polisher is more than up to the job, much better than when i did it by hand so paying £150 for one is just not worth it really.

With regards to T-Cut I would avoid it! It's very abrasive and it doesn't break down (modern polishes like Scratch X tend to use diminishing abrasives that break down as you work them) and it contains amonia.
So T-Cut is like trying to polish your car with sand and bleech! It was good 30 years ago but polishes have moved on as too have automotive paints.
As far as I know all of the paints on the 6 and Rally are clear coat finish even the solid colours (meaning they have laquer on them). So you should choose a polish that is clear coat safe! Meguiars Scratch X is.
These polishes can be effective but you will need to really work the polish if applying by hand you will never be able to acheive the same results as if using a good quality machine polisher. A good quality random orbit polisher will osalate at 4,500 rpm! How fast you you apply polish by hand?
Weather you want to spend a large sum of money on polishers and polishes depends on the finish you wish to achieve?
If the surface is prepared properly (clay then polish)the surface is like glass and applying wax needs only be done by hand and wiped and buufed off with a quality microfibre towl.
Like I said check out the web site I mention in my 1st post. It shows what is achievable.

James,

I have noticed that the swirls and many small scratches seem to come out when it was washed, dried, then polished with super resin and then a coat of wax using a meguires product (I cant remember which one I have).

It just doesn't seem to last over a month before it need doing again.

Some polishes and waxes have fillers in them, so when applied they fill the swirls and mask the imperfections in the paint work, but unfortuetly they are only temporary and so need to be applied often.
Meguiars NXT wax has fillers in it!

Try the Autosmart website. Their products are much better than commercial stuff you buy in shops. I am a car valeter, use 3 different chemical suppliers and overall I reckon their products are the the best. Big grin

As said, DONT use T-Cut. It's very outdated now and is very difficult to apply and a nightmare to take off, especially on a sunny day!

I have been using the Poorboys stuff for a few years now and the SSR2 deswirler takes care of a lot of fine scratches by hand, Then I use their polish and then wax and the results are great for the price I find.

I bought some PB Black hole a few weeks back as well which also fills scratches as well, so will be giving the car another proper clean in a week or 2 and will let you know the results Smile
